The Imaginary Machine, November 4-November 28, 2016.
A machine is a tool containing one or more parts that uses energy to perform an intended action. As we are losing our understanding of how machines work or how we can fix them, this subject is both one of nostalgia but also one that allows us to rethink our relationship to the machines around us. From Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times, to Yves Tingley’s self-destructing kinetic machines to Eva Hesse’s idiosyncratic drawings that contain machine-like parts, artists have long fantasized about the possibility of creating imaginary machines. The artists in this exhibition have been invited to create an “imaginary machine” using whatever medium they choose. The results will be inspiring, delightful and enigmatic. Curated by Wendy Welch. Other Living Things, September 9-October 3, 2016.
Victoria artist Liam Hanna-Lloyd’s works capture poignant and fantastical moments of introspection, connection and dissonance. Developing realms in which otherworldly creatures embody human-like behaviours, Lloyd creates complex emotional landscapes lush in imagination that mirror the maps of his own inner psyche. Curated by Laura Gildner.
