MAILMANIA 3

Mailmania 3 features the work of 200 artists from 28 countries and includes an array of mail art.The postal system is the medium for these sometimes poignant, often amusing mailed art pieces. Mailmania includes illustrated letters, zines, artist trading cards and postcards collected and organized by Dale Roberts.                                                                                              January 9 – January 23, 2009

 

SHELTER
Rene Francisco Rodriguez is an internationally recognized, contemporary Cuban artist with a diverse body of work. Producing projects in a multitude of disciplines including installation, sculpture, video, painting, photography, and performance Rodriguez challenges boundaries between art and everyday life to explore personal and social contexts of artistic production. Shelter was an artist-in-residence project Rene did in collaboration with VISA sculpture and photography students in the Slide Room Gallery. This sculptural and photo-based collaborative project was done in conjunction with the Assume Nothing: New Social Practice exhibition at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Participating students: Melissa Gignac, Cassandra Hadley, Anne Marie McPartlin, Alejandra Munoz, Jennifer Wilson, Maureen Calkins, Laura Feeleus, June Higgins, Helen Mason, Tanta Pennington and Jillian Player. Project was coordinated by d bradley muir of VISA and Lisa Baldiserra of the AGGV.

REPRESENTATIONS OF DESIRE
Tableaux photography is the focus on this exhibition by Sabrina Ovesen and Christine Clarke. Sabrina’s work focuses on photographs of found antique ceramic dolls against coloured backdrops, while Christine’s photographs are of constructed paper mache birds posed in the abandoned aviary in Beacon Hill Park.Both works will address some of the complex issues surrounding desire and expectation.

QUESTIONING THE POSE
Jocelyn Beyak and Jonathan Woods presented photographs that deal with the figure and the effect of the constructed and/or spontaneous pose.

COLOUR AND CONSTRUCTIONS IN COLOUR AND LIGHT
This exhibition was comprised of two one-week exhibitions showcasing the the work done in Xane St Phillip’s Understanding Colour II course this semester. The first part of the exhibition consisted of multi panelled paintings and the second part included paintings on wood constructions that were backlit.

GRADUATION EXHIBITION: PART 1
Ikuyo Ito graduation project included drawings, paintings and sculptures that filled the Slide Room Gallery. This exhibition culminated Ikuyo’s Diploma of Fine Arts program at the Vancouver Island School of Art.

TRANSACTIONS OF THE EYE
Exhbition included forty diverse and imaginative drawings and collages by Vancouver-based artist Harold Coego who is originally from Cuba.

PROOF OF IDENTIFICATION
Curatorial project by Kathy Guthrie includes work that addresses ideas surrounding identity through mark-making, text and handwriting. Participating artists: Alesha Davies-Fowlie, Lorraine Douglas, Jill Ehlert, Coco Jones and Lisa Rose.

FACING THE WALL
Kathleen Lane presented an installation of almost 200 drawings that followed the circumference of the Slide Room Gallery room.

AT CLOSE RANGE
Washington-state based artist, Marianne Brabanski presented a series of amalgamated portraits based on her memories of some of her patients in her career as an audiologist.
November 12 – December 4, 2009

THE HORIZONTAL LINE: LANDSCAPE & MYTH
Curatorial project by Jillian Player that explores the idea of cultural representations of landscape. Participating artists: Tyler Hodgins, Sarah Houghton, Rhonda Usipiuk, Jillan Valpy, and Grant Watson.
